Frequently Asked Question

What is different about Mint Dental Hygiene?
Mint Dental Hygiene is an independent dental hygiene clinic in Takapuna, Auckland, focused on prevention, periodontal health and long-term maintenance.Rather than providing a traditional “scale and polish”, appointments are tailored to your individual needs and may incorporate advanced technologies including BIOLASE laser therapy, Advanced Biofilm Mapping™, air polishing and precision ultrasonic instrumentation. You’ll also see the same experienced dental hygienist at every visit, providing continuity of care and allowing changes in your oral health to be closely monitored over time.
Do I need a dentist referral to see a dental hygienist?
No. You can book directly with Mint Dental Hygiene without a referral from a dentist.Mint Dental Hygiene works independently while collaborating with dentists, periodontists and other dental or healthcare professionals when appropriate. If something is identified that requires diagnosis or treatment outside the scope of dental hygiene, you will be advised and referred appropriately.
What is laser dental hygiene?
Mint Dental Hygiene uses advanced BIOLASE diode laser technology as an adjunct to selected dental hygiene and periodontal treatments. When clinically appropriate, laser therapy can be incorporated alongside conventional periodontal debridement to help manage bacteria and inflamed periodontal tissues and support healing.Laser technology is also used at Mint for photobiomodulation, selected TMJ discomfort, cold sores and mouth ulcers, and professional tooth whitening.
Can you treat gum disease?
Yes. Periodontal care is a major focus at Mint Dental Hygiene.Treatment is tailored to the severity and complexity of your condition and may include detailed periodontal assessment, digital radiographs, minimally invasive subgingival debridement, advanced air polishing, laser-assisted therapy and personalised home-care instruction.More complex or advanced cases may require collaborative treatment with a periodontist.
What is Advanced Biofilm Mapping™?
Dental biofilm is the community of microorganisms that naturally lives in the mouth. When its balance changes, it can contribute to inflammation and periodontal disease.Advanced Biofilm Mapping™ allows selected plaque samples to be viewed under phase-contrast microscopy, providing additional information about the characteristics and activity of the biofilm present. This can be particularly useful for patients with ongoing periodontal problems or inflammation that does not appear consistent with the amount of visible plaque.
Is Mint a holistic or biological dental hygiene clinic?
Mint Dental Hygiene takes an evidence-informed, whole-person approach to dental hygiene.Oral health does not exist in isolation, so your medical history, medications, lifestyle and other relevant health factors are considered when planning your care.Where appropriate, minimally invasive techniques and carefully selected products are used, while recommendations remain guided by individual clinical needs and current evidence.
I have sensitive teeth or I'm nervous about dental treatment. Can you help?
Absolutely. Comfort is an important part of the Mint experience.Treatment can be adapted for sensitive or anxious patients, with options including warm water, topical or local anaesthetic where appropriate, gentle air polishing and precision instrumentation.Mint Dental Hygiene also offers a Comfort Menu with additional options designed to make your appointment feel calmer and more comfortable. And for those who would appreciate some four-legged reassurance, Willow, Mint's therapy dog, may also be available.
Can children and teenagers come to Mint?
Yes. Mint Dental Hygiene welcomes children from age six and teenagers, including those undergoing orthodontic treatment.Appointments focus not only on professional cleaning but also on helping young people develop effective brushing and interdental cleaning techniques that they can maintain themselves.
